Armenian Dual Language Immersion is a choice program. Families enroll because they want something more for their children, biliteracy, cultural connection, academic depth. But when content gets complex, as it inevitably does around second and third grade, families who do not fully understand the model are the first to pull their children out. "This is too much Armenian," they say, not because the program has failed, but because no one helped them understand what the program actually is.
Armenian DLI is not a heritage language class. It is not basic literacy or the ability to write a letter to grandparents. It is a rigorous, standards-based immersion program that develops language to the depth a child would have received had they been educated in Armenia, while simultaneously developing full academic proficiency in the partner language of the country where the program is offered. That is an extraordinary educational commitment, and families cannot sustain what they do not understand.
